Not So Bummer Summer!

Well, I haven't blogged all summer long! We have been on hyper mode. In the 8 weeks of summer we hosted 6 different families and went on 2 trips. You do the math...pretty much nonstop!The girls also took a trip to New Orleans by themselves. That's a story for another day! The flight attendant calling me AFTER their scheduled departure time was not what I was expecting! Anyway, we were able to see LOTS of old friends!  Yeah, one might say we were kind of busy. I really do enjoy company, good thing! The girls do, too! We have plenty of room and now with the pool we have constant entertainment. We have beaches close by, so looking for shark's teeth on the beach has been a new fun hobby of ours. AND of course there's the Museum of Natural History! My kids have been in it a few (dozen) times. It's one of the best Smithsonians in DC so I really encourage everyone to go while they are here. Well, Maggie has had enough of the big elephant! I understand. Some of our company even helped us with some much needed yard work! That's always nice too, right? Company is also fun because we get to do a lot of sightseeing and eating out. We plan our day around the food we eat! Nothing's wrong with that! We even steamed our own crabs, like they do in this part of the country. They were pretty good, but being from the parish and a fisherman's daughter, I have to say I rather them boiled.

So the girls are back at school and are doing GREAT! I'm so happy for them! Mags was a bit nervous about 4th grade but I think she's alright now. Julia is excited to be a 5th grader. That is the  highest grade at the school so she thinks she is bigtiming it! She has her glasses and will soon have her braces so she's transforming into nerd mode and is very proud of it!  I miss them during the day. I guess it's time for me to get a life. I am awaiting my Maryland teaching certificate, so I have future plans for that. As for now, I'll stick with laundry and dishes. I'll post a few pics of the girls this summer....

Today we went down to the city.  We walked from the hotel to the train station.  There started the observations/people watching.  We were sitting waiting for our train and a guy loudly tells the woman next to him "I'm waiting for my friend, he's coming from Grand Central...." and he goes on.  She ignores him and scoots over. He then makes eye contact with me and repeats himself. I am thinking to myself, do I look away now and take that womans lead, respond to him, what should I do? What do I know? I am not from here. So, like a true southerner I smiled and said "that's nice".  Then he got Dave's attention and he went on to tell us about his birthday and where he grew up.  He then gave us a map and told us that he did not have any snacks for the girls but he can show us on the map how to get to the American Girl store because he thinks they will like that.  He circled on the map where we should go. Interesting. It's Possible

What an eventful week!  Snow and more snow and more snow and more snow. It is just crazy.  They never have this much snow.  Outside of a seafood restaurant they built a big snow lobster and spray painted it red.  It's just like building a sand castle...NOT! Wednesday the roads were really nasty.  We decided to stay at a friend's house in Somers after I picked the kids up from school.  We know them through Dave's job.  The wife so graciously took us in and fed us.  We are so blessed to have them.  I was scared to death to ride on these slushy, icy roads. Not to mention these hotel walls were getting to me, so I was happy to have a change of scenery. This is where we got our first lesson in snow shoveling.  I will post a picture of my car buried.  Luckily, the driveway was plowed for us. The snow is so thick, when Maggie walked in it yesterday she lost both of her shoes. They had a 2 hour delay at school that morning.  Maggie caught the bus with her children. The bus driver

Goodbye Skipper

I'm so sad to report that Skipper has gone to doggie heaven. He was in such a state of pain and unawareness that it was time to let him go. Keeping him alive would have been for us and not him. We knew what the right decision was, but it still was very hard to do. I don't think he would have been happy going in circles for the rest of his life. His neurological symptoms were not improving, but getting worse. He was such a beautiful dog. I don't think he would have been happy not being able to chase birds! Lots of things are going through our minds right now. If this, if that. How do we tell the girls? What can we do to make this easier on them? What was he feeling? If dogs could talk! Despite our ordeal with Skipper we still managed to have a lovely time with our visitors. Dave's brother and family flew in for an extended weekend! We did a little sight seeing, a home DIY project, shopped, laughed a lot and even cried some! Oh, we also saw a few snowflakes. It is so
